Radiology Information System is a computerized database used by radiology departments to store, manipulate and distribute patient radiological data and imagery. RIS is more of an administrative tool used to manage the patient workflow and patient records within a radiology department.
The system generally consists of:
- Patient tracking.
- Scheduling.
- Result reporting.
- Image tracking.
It complements the Hospital Information System (HIS) and are critical to efficient workflow to radiology practices.
This workflow management system is designed to improve efficiency, productivity, and data accuracy throughout the busy imaging procedure. Sophisticated automation tools sharply reduce manual-entry errors, improving patient safety and care.
PACS, on the other hand, is mainly used to store images acquired on a modality and distribute them on demand to processing or reviewing workstation.
Radiology Department in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) has been using Radiology Information System (RIS) since 2003.
